Student loan provider and government supported agency, Sallie Mae, plans to close its call center in Killeen, Texas. The closing will eliminate about 500 jobs. Sallie Mae announced that it will eliminate this center, as well as their facility in Panama City, Florida. The closings are designed to eliminate 1,200 jobs this year, and 1,300 next year.
Sallie Mae said that the proposed cuts will not take place for at least two months, and could possibly be extended into 2011. The company will allow call center representatives to apply for other jobs in the company, and will hold career fairs to help them find new opportunities. The company will provide generous severance packages, including a minimum of four months worth of pay.
