Good Luck Chuck
New York Senator Charles Schumer has introduced ill-advised legislation that will impose a tax of 25 cents per customer service phone call transferred out of the United States. The bill also calls for the company in question to alert consumers that they are speaking with someone in another country.
This is bold faced protectionism, that if passed, would benefit nobody and harm many. Does Senator Schumer really believe that the new horizon of jobs in the US is in customer service call centers? How about coming up with a plan to help the market create new jobs, rather than jobs that result from the destruction of successful practices.
Collateral Damage
The unintended consequences of this plan, if executed to Schumer's wishes, would be many. Businesses would be forced to hold back on hiring new employees for potentially innovative jobs because they would be forced to increase call center hiring expenses. The consumers to whom Schumer hopes to appeal could be forced to endure lengthy hold times when calling customer service, and could be forced to pay higher prices on the products or services in question.
Horrible idea. Horrible legislation.
